Introduction of Count Noun
In English Language or In English Grammar, There are two nouns that we can calculate the things or objects that are known as Count Nouns. With the help of counting nouns, we can calculate all things. It is language to language because in some languages we can’t count like as ( Japanese etc ). It is very understood here there are two main differences in count nouns and non-count nouns. The difference is that they are using different articles and non-count nouns are not in the plural form.
What is Count Noun?
The count noun is a name of a noun. It is showing the objects, things and persons which we can count numerically and other ways are called Count nouns. Count means more than one object. The article ” an / an ” is use with count noun is indefinite or in the singular. ” a ” article means it is singular. The other name of a count noun is ” countable nouns “. The things which can calculate by the easy way that is count nouns.
Example:
- There are five apples on the chair.
Here, ( In this sentence, we easily count ” how many apples on the chair? “ and your answer is ” five apples on the chair “. The number we can easily calculate and the numbers are denoting how many things ).
- There is an egg in my pocket.
Here, ( In this sentence, we easily count ” how many eggs in my pocket? “ and your answer is ” one egg “. ( an ) is an article it indicates one thing or singular noun ).
Main Points of Count Nouns
- It is quantified by the quantity of instead of one.
- They do not have in plural form. They have only a singular form.
- The Characteristic of count nouns = non-count nouns.
- They can not take articles ” a, an or one ” before modifiers.
- They take ” mush ” with modifiers.

Look around your room and name some of the things you or your parents had to buy: a bed, chest of drawers, socks, books, etc. These are all nouns or countable nouns that you can count. You can count the number of books on the shelf or shoes in the closet. You can count the walls around your bedroom and the blankets on your bed.
Some Rules of Count Noun
1: The count nouns are separate with individual divisions and calculate. They are both in Singular form and also in Plural form. Many nouns are count nouns.
Examples:
- One pencil, two pencils
- One car, two cars
- One desk, two desks
2: However, Some countable nouns are in the plural form in English Language and In English Grammar.
Examples:
- Shirts
- Cups
- Pens
- Rulers
- Boards
There are quantity words and some are served with a sort of quantifier to indicate how they are calculated. ” a group of students “, ” two groups of students “, ” some students “.
How did count noun change in plural form?
A count noun is commonly made in the plural form by adding ” -s and es “.
Examples:
- One girl, two girls
- One step, two steps
- One computer, two computers
- One potato, two potatoes
- One church, two churches
When any nouns are ended with ” y ” and ” y ” change into ” ies ” to make the plural form.
Examples:
- One company, two companies
- One party, two parties
However, When a vowel letter precedes the ” y ” and ” y ” is changed into ” s ” to make it Plural form.
Examples:
- One toy, two toys
- One monkey, two monkeys
When any nouns end with ” o ” and we add” es ” with them to the plural form.
Examples:
- One potato, two potatoes
- One tomato, two tomatoes
When The nouns end with ” f ” or ” fe ” and ” f ” change into ” v ” and we add ” es ” with them to make it plural form.
Examples:
- One thief, two thieves
- One hoof, two hooves
When some count nouns have irregular plural forms. Many of those forms come from earlier forms of the English Language.
Examples:
- One foot, two feet
- One person, two person
- One tooth, two teeth
NOTE:
Single names must contain one word for each identification field. It can be an article, a pronoun, or a possessive noun (for example, “a”, “an”, “the”, “this”, or a possessive noun).
